Precium was founded in 2020 based on the insight that there is more to getting paid than accepting payments. Co-founder and CEO, Ruaan Botha, was inspired to start the company by seeing how much time and manual effort businesses spend on their payment operations, including integrating new payment methods and managing failed payments. When asking 30+ businesses where they would invest $1 if they had to fix their payment systems, they all unhesitatingly confirmed they’d spend at least 90c on increasing payment success rates.
It turned out that this was a much bigger problem than he had initially thought. In African markets, 30% of payments fail on average, costing businesses billions of dollars in lost revenue each year. Businesses face a 300%+ higher churn rate than the global average, with up to 40% of this churn attributable to payment failures. Combined with rapid growth in digital payments, businesses are facing increasingly complex payment operations that hinder online commerce on the continent.
